When passion calls, even the best-laid plans can change. Marissa’s story is a testament to this, showcasing how following your heart can lead to building a thriving community and making an impact on an entire industry. As the Executive Director of the Retail Bakers of America (RBA), Marissa has transformed her love for baking into a career centered on education, connection, and empowerment for bakers across the nation.
A Sweet Beginning: Marissa’s Journey into Baking
Marissa’s journey didn’t begin in a traditional kitchen but rather in a law school classroom. After graduating from undergrad, she found herself pursuing higher education. In between classes, she would bake cookies for her peers, finding joy and fulfillment in the process. Eventually, Marissa realized that baking was more than a hobby; it was her passion and purpose. She made the bold decision to pursue a career in baking.
Her journey began with an email to Joanne Chang of Boston’s renowned Flour Bakery. Though Marissa didn’t know Joanne personally, she reached out with a simple but clear message: “I want to bake, and I want to learn.” Joanne welcomed her to work front-of-house, and Marissa’s baking career officially began. From there, she returned to her hometown in Cleveland, Ohio, to work at a local bakery before enrolling at the prestigious Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in Hyde Park, New York.
It was at the CIA that Marissa first encountered the RBA. The Certified Master Baker (CMB) exam, one of the RBA’s most rigorous certifications, took place while she was a student. Observing her chef instructors go through the process gave her a first-hand look at the RBA’s dedication to elevating the baking profession. This early connection with the RBA planted the seeds for her eventual leadership role within the organization.
The Mission of the RBA: Supporting Bakers Everywhere
Under Marissa’s leadership, the RBA continues its mission of supporting retail bakeries, their owners, employees, and educators. The organization provides essential resources such as education, certifications, and networking opportunities designed to help members thrive in an ever-changing industry.
“The RBA’s mission is to empower retail bakeries,” Marissa shares. “We offer tools and support that help bakers and bakery owners navigate challenges, from rising ingredient costs to keeping up with rapidly changing consumer trends.”
The RBA serves a diverse membership base, including single-store and multi-location bakeries, professional bakers, students, educators, and even cottage bakers. As Marissa notes, the pandemic transformed the baking landscape, with more businesses embracing e-commerce and non-traditional storefronts—an evolution the RBA has wholeheartedly welcomed.
Key Benefits of RBA Membership
One of the RBA’s standout offerings is its robust network, facilitated through RBA Connect—an online platform where members can collaborate, share ideas, and find solutions to common challenges. Marissa highlights the value of this community, saying, “In a retail bakery, you’re often isolated. Connecting with other bakers who understand your challenges can make a world of difference.”
In addition to networking, the RBA provides multiple levels of certifications for bakers and decorators, from students to Certified Master Bakers. These credentials not only elevate technical skills but also open doors to career advancement. Members also enjoy exclusive discounts, access to trade shows, and participation in educational events.
Evolving with the Industry
As the baking industry evolves, so too does the RBA. Marissa emphasizes the organization’s commitment to embracing digital education—a necessity in today’s fast-paced world. Webinars, podcasts (like this one!), and other online resources ensure that members have access to quality education no matter where they are.
Marissa also highlights how in-person events remain a cornerstone of the RBA experience. Initiatives like RBA roadshows and the highly anticipated 2025 IBIE event in Las Vegas provide members with opportunities to connect, learn, and grow. “There’s something magical about being in a room full of people who share your passion for baking,” she says.
A Vision for the Future
Marissa’s vision for the RBA includes expanding its reach to cottage bakers, increasing certification participation, and fostering deeper partnerships with allied organizations. “We want to ensure we’re leading the way in the retail baking industry,” she explains.
She also sees the RBA as more than just an organization—it’s a family. The giving and sharing nature of its members is one of its greatest strengths. Whether it’s a baker in Georgia inviting another baker from Cleveland to visit their shop or sharing tips on equipment and recipes during a roadshow, the sense of community is unmatched.
Why Join the RBA?
For bakers, educators, and suppliers alike, joining the RBA means becoming part of a supportive and resourceful network. Whether you’re looking to improve your technical skills through certifications, connect with like-minded professionals, or access educational tools, the RBA has something for everyone.
“This is a community that understands your journey,” Marissa says. “If you’re passionate about baking and want to grow, the RBA is the place for you.”
